Water is an essential resource and one of the prime elements responsible for life on Earth, circulating through the land just as it does through the human body - dissolving, transporting and replenishing nutrients and organic matter. |
Water covers two-thirds of the Earth's surface, yet only 2.5% of it is freshwater, most of which is locked up in glaciers and icecaps (1). As a society, we utilize freshwater in crop cultivation, industrial processes and everyday household practices, but because municipally treated freshwater is very inexpensive, people often ignore the implications of wasting it. Water used inefficiently in our homes, businesses and institutions either goes down the sewer or evaporates into the atmosphere. In both cases this freshwater may end up in the oceans instead of in surface or ground reservoirs where it could be reused.
